What AutoPlus actually is
AutoPlus is the claims and policy history database the Canadian auto insurance industry runs. When you apply anywhere, the broker or insurer enters your driver's licence number and the report returns in seconds. It is the reason "I'll just switch companies" never hides a claim.
It is distinct from your driver's abstract, which comes from the Ministry of Transportation and lists convictions and demerit points. Insurers pull both. One shows what you claimed; the other shows what you were convicted of.
What's on it
- Every policy you've held, often going back decades, with the companies and dates
- Every claim — the type (collision, comprehensive, theft, bodily injury), the date, and how much was paid
- Your fault percentage on each collision
- Third-party claims made against you, including ones you may not have known about
- Cancellations and the reason — non-payment, misrepresentation, non-disclosure
- Vehicles you've insured
How to get your own copy, free
- Fastest — the myAutoPlus appAvailable at myAutoPlus.ca. Free, and gives you immediate access to your own insurance and claims history rather than waiting for post.
- By request from CGICGI maintains the database. Download the Consumer AutoPlus request form from their site, send it with a scanned copy of the front of your driver's licence as proof of residence. The report is mailed to the address on that licence within about 10 business days.
- Also get your DASH reportThe Insurance Bureau of Canada provides a separate Driver and Auto Search History report. Free once a year, and worth cross-checking against AutoPlus.
- And your driver's abstractOrdered from the Ontario government. There is a fee for the certified versions. This is the conviction record, not the claims record.
Many articles still say the only route is mail and a 10-day wait. The app route is faster — check both if you want the complete picture.
Reading it without panicking
Three things to look at, in order:
- Fault percentages. Ontario fault is always 0, 25, 50, 75 or 100. If a collision you believe was not your fault shows 50%, that is the single most expensive line on the page. Disputing a fault determination is a separate process worth understanding.
- Amounts paid. A claim you thought closed at zero showing a payment changes whether it is rateable. Query it.
- Claims you don't recognise. Duplicates of the same loss, or a third-party claim you were never told about, both happen and both are correctable.
Fixing an error — the exact route
This trips people up because the obvious move is the wrong one. You do not dispute with the database. CGI only holds what insurers report to it.
- Contact the insurer that reported the entrySpecifically their Complaint Officer or Ombudsperson — not the general claims line. FSRA publishes a list of these officers for licensed Ontario insurers.
- Put it in writing with evidenceState the entry, why it's wrong, and attach whatever supports you: the closing letter, correspondence showing no payment, the police or Collision Reporting Centre report, photographs.
- Escalate if it isn't correctedThe General Insurance OmbudService reviews disputes free of charge. Errors reported through DASH can be disputed directly with the Insurance Bureau of Canada, typically processed in about 20 business days.
When to check it
- Before shopping for insurance — so you know what every quote is based on
- After any claim closes — to confirm the fault percentage and payment match what you were told
- If a renewal jumps unexpectedly — before you accept the explanation you're given
- Before a job that requires driving — some employers ask for it
- If you're moving province or country — it's your proof of insurance history
Common questions
How do I get my AutoPlus report in Ontario?
It's free. The quickest route is the myAutoPlus app at myAutoPlus.ca, which gives you immediate access to your own history. Alternatively, download the Consumer AutoPlus request form from CGI, send it with a scanned copy of the front of your driver's licence as proof of residence, and the report is mailed to that address within roughly 10 business days. It's also worth ordering the separate DASH report from the Insurance Bureau of Canada.
What information does AutoPlus show insurers?
It shows every auto policy you have held, often going back decades, along with every claim, the type of claim, the amounts paid, and the fault percentage assigned to you on each collision. It also includes claims made against you by third parties, any policy cancellations along with the reason such as non-payment or misrepresentation, and a list of vehicles you have insured.
How do I correct a mistake on my AutoPlus report?
You dispute it with the insurer that supplied the information, not with CGI, because CGI only holds what insurers report. Contact that insurer's Complaint Officer or Ombudsperson — FSRA publishes a list — and put the dispute in writing with supporting evidence such as a closing letter, correspondence showing no payment was made, or the police report. If it is not corrected, the General Insurance OmbudService reviews disputes free of charge, and DASH errors can be disputed directly with the Insurance Bureau of Canada.
Does a claim from another province show on my Ontario record?
Yes. AutoPlus is maintained nationally for the Canadian auto insurance industry, so policies and claims from other provinces appear when an Ontario insurer or broker pulls your report. This is one reason moving provinces does not reset your claims history.
