What it costs by city
Ontario rates on where the vehicle is parked overnight, and the spread is larger than most people expect. These are estimates for a full G licence, 10+ years licensed, no claims or tickets, 2023 model year, $1,000 deductible, winter tires.
| Where it's parked | Estimated annual premium |
|---|---|
| Brampton | $2,920 – $4,670 |
| Scarborough | $2,220 – $3,550 |
| North York | $1,980 – $3,170 |
| Mississauga | $2,830 – $4,540 |
| Toronto (central) | $1,770 – $2,840 |
| Markham / Richmond Hill | $1,840 – $2,940 |
| Hamilton | $1,610 – $2,570 |
| Oakville / Burlington | $1,450 – $2,320 |
| Barrie | $1,370 – $2,200 |
| Kitchener / Waterloo | $1,340 – $2,140 |
| London | $1,340 – $2,140 |
| Ottawa | $1,300 – $2,070 |
| Kingston | $1,230 – $1,960 |
| Sudbury | $1,190 – $1,900 |
| Rural Ontario | $1,260 – $2,020 |

Why the CX-5 rates the way it does
The CX-5 is the quiet answer for buyers who want a compact SUV without the theft loading that comes with a RAV4 or CR-V. Same segment, similar price, noticeably less theft attention.
Repair costs sit slightly above a Corolla but the overall profile is benign.
Parts cost a little more than Toyota or Honda equivalents but not enough to offset the theft advantage.
How model year changes it
A newer CX-5 costs more to insure because it costs more to replace. Same driver, same city (Mississauga), different model years:
| Model year | Typical value | Estimated annual premium |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | $37,000 | $3,130 – $5,010 |
| 2023 | $24,500 | $2,830 – $4,540 |
| 2020 | $17,500 | $2,720 – $4,360 |
| 2016 | $11,000 | $2,370 – $3,790 |
| 2012 | $11,000 | $2,220 – $3,550 |
This is why a slightly older vehicle can be cheaper twice over — lower purchase price and lower premium.
How your record changes it
Same CX-5, same city, different drivers. This is usually a bigger swing than the vehicle choice itself:
| Driver | Estimated annual premium |
|---|---|
| Clean record, 10+ years licensed, full G | $2,830 – $4,540 |
| G2 licence, 1–2 years licensed | $4,690 – $7,510 |
| One at-fault claim in the last 6 years | $3,800 – $6,080 |
| Full G, 3–5 years licensed, clean | $3,400 – $5,440 |
If you've had an accident, the fault and premium calculator estimates what a specific claim does at renewal.
Cheaper alternatives worth comparing
If insurance cost is part of your decision, these tend to rate lower for the same driver:
| Vehicle | Why it's cheaper |
|---|---|
| Subaru Forester | Similar profile, comparable premium |
| Hyundai Tucson | Lower replacement cost |
| Toyota Corolla Cross | Smaller and cheaper |
| Mazda CX-30 | Same brand, lower value |
The estimator compares body styles side by side using your own profile.
How to pay less on this vehicle
- Shop it properly. The single biggest lever. Quotes for the same driver on the same CX-5 routinely differ by 50% or more between insurers.
- Winter tires. Ontario insurers are required to offer a discount when they're fitted.
- Telematics. A usage-based app is usually the largest single discount available.
- Bundle. Even a tenant policy usually discounts both.
- Raise the deductible — only if you could absorb it after a claim.
- Check OPCF 43 if you're buying new. On a total loss it pays original purchase price instead of depreciated value.
