What it costs by city
Ontario rates on where the vehicle is parked overnight, and the spread is larger than most people expect. These are estimates for a full G licence, 10+ years licensed, no claims or tickets, 2023 model year, $1,000 deductible, winter tires.
| Where it's parked | Estimated annual premium |
|---|---|
| Brampton | $3,310 – $5,300 |
| Scarborough | $2,520 – $4,030 |
| North York | $2,250 – $3,600 |
| Mississauga | $3,220 – $5,150 |
| Toronto (central) | $2,010 – $3,220 |
| Markham / Richmond Hill | $2,080 – $3,330 |
| Hamilton | $1,820 – $2,920 |
| Oakville / Burlington | $1,650 – $2,640 |
| Barrie | $1,560 – $2,500 |
| Kitchener / Waterloo | $1,520 – $2,420 |
| London | $1,520 – $2,420 |
| Ottawa | $1,470 – $2,350 |
| Kingston | $1,390 – $2,220 |
| Sudbury | $1,350 – $2,160 |
| Rural Ontario | $1,440 – $2,300 |

Why the CR-V rates the way it does
The CR-V rates much like the RAV4, and for the same reason: theft. It is one of the more frequently stolen vehicles in Ontario, and insurers price that in. Everything else about it — safety, repair cost, claims frequency — is unremarkable.
The result is a premium slightly above what its purchase price alone would suggest.
Repair costs are moderate. As with the RAV4, theft rather than repair drives the premium.
How model year changes it
A newer CR-V costs more to insure because it costs more to replace. Same driver, same city (Mississauga), different model years:
| Model year | Typical value | Estimated annual premium |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | $40,000 | $3,550 – $5,680 |
| 2023 | $27,000 | $3,220 – $5,150 |
| 2020 | $19,500 | $3,090 – $4,950 |
| 2016 | $12,500 | $2,690 – $4,300 |
| 2012 | $13,000 | $2,520 – $4,030 |
This is why a slightly older vehicle can be cheaper twice over — lower purchase price and lower premium.
How your record changes it
Same CR-V, same city, different drivers. This is usually a bigger swing than the vehicle choice itself:
| Driver | Estimated annual premium |
|---|---|
| Clean record, 10+ years licensed, full G | $3,220 – $5,150 |
| G2 licence, 1–2 years licensed | $5,330 – $8,520 |
| One at-fault claim in the last 6 years | $4,310 – $6,900 |
| Full G, 3–5 years licensed, clean | $3,860 – $6,180 |
If you've had an accident, the fault and premium calculator estimates what a specific claim does at renewal.
Cheaper alternatives worth comparing
If insurance cost is part of your decision, these tend to rate lower for the same driver:
| Vehicle | Why it's cheaper |
|---|---|
| Mazda CX-5 | Similar practicality, lower theft exposure |
| Subaru Forester | Comparable size, weaker theft record |
| Hyundai Tucson | Lower replacement cost |
| Honda HR-V | Smaller and cheaper to insure |

How to pay less on this vehicle
- Shop it properly. The single biggest lever. Quotes for the same driver on the same CR-V routinely differ by 50% or more between insurers.
- Winter tires. Ontario insurers are required to offer a discount when they're fitted.
- Telematics. A usage-based app is usually the largest single discount available.
- Bundle. Even a tenant policy usually discounts both.
- Raise the deductible — only if you could absorb it after a claim.
- Check OPCF 43 if you're buying new. On a total loss it pays original purchase price instead of depreciated value.
